After receipt of the order in the middle of September of this year, Pallmann manufactured a new machine, in record time, which outdoes all machines delivered worldwide to date, in size and capacity.
Already In the middle of October, after only 4 weeks of manufacturing time, PALLMANN was scheduled to deliver the machine to Weyerhaeuser Company in Sutton. |
Manufacturing a machine of this type normally takes more than 4 months. The machine is designed to produce wood flakes from logs which are the base material for the so-called Oriented Strand Boards (OSB). OSB is primarily used for the interior construction of houses such as floor coverings, construction- and packaging materials. The Pallmann Universal Flaker, type PZU 24-725 was delivered right on schedule.
More than 190 employees were involved in the realization of this project. In addition to all ongoing orders, Pallmann summoned all of its strength to complete this monumental task on time. Simple parts of the machine were manufactured in the USA at various locations. The centerpiece, however, was manufactured at Pallmann headquarters. The coordination of the different productions and the installation and start-up on site was a big challenge for the Engineering and the Service Department of Pallmann as well as for the Logistics Department which ensured that all factions came together at the correct time. | | In order to resume production as quickly as possible, the machine was dispatched by airfreight. In the morning of October 25th, the 32-ton flaker was loaded at Pallmann headquarters in Zweibrücken. A low bed- and a semi-tractor trailer transported the machine parts to Zweibrücken airport, from which the machine was airfreighted to the customer.
The second largest transport plane in the world, an ANTONOV AN 124 was chartered to fulfill this task. On October 26th, at 5.35 p.m. the ANTONOV landed at Zweibrücken Airport.
At 7.00 p.m., under the watchful eyes of hundreds of spectators, the Universal Flaker, type PZU, was loaded by crane into the ANTONOV. At approximately 9.00 p.m. the aircraft headed towards its final destination of Pittsburgh, with refueling stops in Ireland and Newfoundland. Upon arrival at Pittsburgh, the flaker was trucked to Sutton, West Virginia where a Pallmann assembly crew was waiting to ensure on-time installation and start-up. |
